"LADINA", AN ASSOCIATION OF SEPHARDIC CULTURE

Recently, a series of events in Porto, Portugal, such as the dedication by the Sephardic grand rabbi Shlomo Amar of a new sefer Torah to the Kadoorie synagogue (Mekhor Haim-Fountain of Life-built by captain Barros Basto in 1938 specifically for marranos-anousim) and the start of a return program to the house of Israel under the supervision of rabbi Elisha Salas, has inspired us to create Ladina as a vehicle to express our desires and our long held sentiments.

After 500 years of suppression by the Inquisition, forced baptisms and other anti-Semitic practices, we wish to affirm our inalienable right to practice the traditions and rituals of our Sephardic heritage openly and without fear of restrictions or oppression.

We are the inheritors of a vast culture which has significantly contributed to the development of the modern western world. It was here in the Iberian peninsula, our dear Sefarad, that some of the world’s greatest thinkers left their imprint on modern civilization. Significant advances in medicine, biology, philosophy, literature, maritime navigation and mapmaking were created by our illustrious ancestors such as Judah Halevi, Abraham Zacuto, Joseph Vizinho, Leon Hebreu, Amado Lusitano, Pedro Nunes, Garcia da Orta, Antonio Jose da Silva, Uriel da Costa, Dona Gracia Mendes and more recently Captain Barros Basto. Moses Maimonides (Rambam), a doctor and philosopher is still regarded as one of the greatest interpreters of the Torah of all time and Isaac de Luria, is the founder of modern Kabala.

Ladina will divulge and disseminate the Sephardic heritage in the tradition of tolerance and co-existence that created the golden age of Sefarad. We chose Ladina to represent both the common language of the Sephardic Jews of Sefarad (Ladino) and to preserve its semantic meaning as used in today's colloquialism, "he (or she) is ladino" (quick on the uptake, astute).

We invite all those who identify with these ideals to associate themselves with us to better realize our objectives.
